Whether adored or abhorred, graffiti and street art provoke passionate debate.

This is the first comprehensive popular survey of the art movement around the world. Organized thematically, it explores the origins of the movement and its evolution, the relationship between street art and the urban environment, its interactions with (or rejection of) the market and the world of commercial galleries, and the culture of street art online.

The book features a wide range of artists working in different media and styles across multiple countries. It explains the terms and language of street art from tags and throwies to culture jamming and subvertising as well as its multiple influences and sub-genres.

Japan has long been a breeding ground for innovative appropriation of Western traditions, as with cinema and baseball. But the fanatical embrace with which Japanese artists have welcomed graffiti has made for a street-art scene wholly apart from its Western origins. As the first English-language book dedicated to Japanese graffiti, Graffiti Japan is an obvious choice for a paperback edition, featuring all the same great photographs and artist interviews with KRESS, BELX2, FATE, TENGA, EMAR, SUIKO, QP, and many more.

The graffiti featured in Graffiti Japan replicates the calligraphic intricacies of the Japanese language with spray paint, depicting how anime and manga characters, national pride, as well as foreign influences, are integral parts of the country's scene. From sprawling, legally sanctioned murals to illegal throw-ups hidden in alleyways, this work could not exist in any other country.

The Noughties saw the rise of a new generation of Club Kids following in the footsteps of their predecessors - the original Club Kids of New York City, who, in turn, had followed London's Blitz generation. In the early 1980s, the Blitz Club in London's Covent Garden became the focal point for an alternative club scene-frequented by Adam Ant, Boy George, Siouxsie Sioux and Steve Strange-which spawned even more radical clubs such as Leigh Bowery's infamous Taboo club in London's Leicester Square. Bowery famously enjoined, 'Dress as though your life depends on it or don't bother', a mantra the new Club Kids have adopted as their own. They dress outrageously, with a penchant for kitsch and anti-fashion. Often with a mixture of their own self-made outfits and carefully selected labels (predominantly Vivienne Westwood), oversized accessories, excessive amounts of make-up and frequently highly androgynous looks, these flamboyant clubbers have created a vibrant New Club Kids' scene in London's bohemian nightlife underground. Fabulous or trashy, beautiful or scary, glamorous or freaky - meet the New Club Kids in these incredible photographs.

Craft has seen a huge resurgence in recent years. This book showcases the new wave of cool crafting quirky, cutting-edge, craft-based artwork, often called Indie Craft or D.I.Y. craft. While the methods and disciplines are often traditional such as embroidery, crochet, knitting, cross-stitch, tapestry, needle felt and plush toy making the finished results are very different. Indie craft is contemporary, sometimes controversial, sometimes kitsch, ironic or humorous, often blurring the lines between art and craft. Work includes tattoo-influenced tapestry/needlepoint, graffiti cross-stitching, cross-stitching on to metal, 3D embroidery, and knitted street art. The book will appeal to the craft community, art, design and textile students, and anyone who enjoys craft-based art.
